Classification by Purpose or Scope

Using scope as a criterion, computers can be classified into two broad categories:

1. Dedicated or Special purpose computers: These are computers that are designed to carry out only                 specified task. The series of instructions that these types of computer follow to carry out its operation is         in-built and cannot be modified. E.g. word processor, robots used in car manufacturing plants

2. General Purpose Computers: These are computers designed to perform a wide variety of operations.             They can be programmed to carry out scientific oriented applications or business oriented ones just by            changing the series of instructions in its memory.
