What is a Computer
The term computer is obtained from the word compute. A computer is an electronic device that inputs (takes in) facts (known as data), and then processes (does something to or with) it. Afterwards it outputs, or displays, the results for you to see.
Data is all kinds of facts, including, pictures, letters, numbers, and sounds. There are two main parts of computers, hardware and software. Hardware is all of the parts of the computer you can see and touch. Software is the instructions that a computer uses to do what you ask it to. Pieces of software are often called programs. The basic function performed by a computer is the execution of a program.
A computer is a programmable machine. The two principal characteristics of a computer are: It responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner and it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program).
Modern Computers Defined
Modern computers are electronic and digital. The actual machinery-wires, transistors, and circuits is called hardware; the instructions and data are called software.
